Soil testing is essential for monitoring soil fertility and identifying constraints to root growth within the topsoil and subsoil. Topsoil samples are usually 0-10cm deep and are ideal to measure immobile nutrients such as phosphorous and trace elements. Subsoil samples can range in depth but are usually taken between 10-90cm or down to a physical barrier such as rock. These subsoil samples are valuable to measure mobile nutrients like nitrogen and sulphur and assess subsoil constraints to root growth. Pre-season soil testing allows for amelioration of constraints like acidity or sodicity and crop nutrition planning for the upcoming season. This is important for both cropping paddocks and pastures.
If you would like paddocks tested this season, please contact the Lincoln Rural agronomy team.
