Filtration Systems

Have your rainwater tanks run dry this summer? Have you got a filtration system on your home or on your drinking water?

If you have already got a rainwater filter system at home and your tanks are low or empty, then your filter system may need to be checked. As our tanks get lower or we get little bursts of rain the
sediment on our roof, in our gutters and in our tanks becomes suspended in our water supply. This sediment is pushed through our pumps and filters causing them to become fouled up a lot faster than normal. A sediment filter captures and removes particles or sediment like dirt or debris from your water.

Are you experiencing any sort of earthy, musty or foul tastes or smells from your rainwater then there may be other contaminants on the roof or in the tank. Things like organic matter and algae, bird or animal droppings and dust/dirt will cause both sediment and potential taste and odour issues. A carbon filter in conjunction with a sediment filter will help to significantly reduce the effects of these contaminants. A carbon filter, also known as an activated carbon filter, removes contaminants and impurities from water through adsorption, where molecules attach to the surface of the activated carbon.

The next option in line with our filtration is Ultraviolet (UV) systems that are used to treat for living bacteria and microbiological contaminants. UV water purifiers are effective at removing microbiological contaminants in water such as bacteria, fungi, protozoans and viruses. UV water purification is a proven technology that uses UV light to destroy 99.99% of harmful microorganisms in water. Alternatively, products like Acquasafe are an additive that can be used to destroy bacteria and viruses at the same time is non-toxic as it breaks down into oxygen and water.

Just because we have collected rainwater and it doesn’t contain chemicals like chlorine and fluoride, it doesn’t become inherently safe to drink. Rainwater must be treated and filtered to ensure it is safe for human consumption, this can be done through filtration systems.
